I'm trying to prepare a lab for my students where they synthesize alumI have measured out 1 gram of aluminum foil and torn it into small piecesI added 25 ml of 3M KOH to the aluminum foilAll the labs I have looked at say that after a few minutes a reaction will take place and it will turn blackFor me, nothing is happeningIt just sits thereAny suggestions? I'm using Food Lion brand aluminum foilI just made the KOH solution.
According to this description the KOH solution has to be hot for the reaction to happenDid you try heating it? chemlab.truman.edu/CHEM130Labs/AlThe only other thing I can think of is that there might be a protective coating on the foil, but that's unlikely.
I have seen covers for newer power filters so I am wondering
aluminum foil will work, or take flexible flat plastic sheeting, heated slightly so that it will bend easily and hold its form, if nothing else, wrap cardboard with saran wrap and seal the edges.

It sounds as if that is not really yarnBut to make it stable (whatever that means) you will need to add more twistIt's hard to do now that it is plied, but can be doneIf it is in fact not yarn but roving, then you need to spin it first, ply it and then you will have a good strong yarnI am right now spinning a lovely merino/silk blend in shades of grey, and I love it! I am spinning it very fine, and it will probably become some lace later, with a few beads put into itIf you don't spin, find a spinner locally and see if they can add some twist to it to make it strongerThere is nothing other you can do to make it strongerMerino and silk both lack body - that is why you are using it - so perhaps you have chosen the wrong yarn for this projectIt would be suitable for something else.
